It's important that you work within the guidelines set out by your instructor for using generative AI in your work. It is a violation of academic integrity if you use generative AI in your assignments without permission from your instructor. Refer to KPU's guide Students and Generative AI at KPU for more information.

In general, it is good academic practice to acknowledge your use of any genAI tool such as ChatGPT, CoPilot, Perplexity, Claude, and so on.

There are a few ways you can do this, depending on what you want to reference in your work:

  • acknowledge the general use of an AI tool
    • for example, you may have used a tool to help you brainstorm a topic
  • reference the generated content itself
    • you may want to refer to the content generated by the tool, such as a summary or an image
  • document the prompt you developed
    • some instructors may want to see the prompt that you used, including any refinements

Details for adding these references to your work can be found on the Artificial Intelligence pages of the library's APA and MLA citation style guides. We will update our Chicago guide once details for citing AI in that style become available.

See also the library's General Artificial Intelligence guide for examples of written acknowledgements of your use of AI.
