If you're new to a topic or trying to gather enough information about it to frame a research question, there are a number of ways you can use the library's resources to get started.

1. Use one of the library's many encyclopedias or dictionaries to learn something about your topic. Most will provide an overview, much like a Wikipedia page, with keywords, controversies, and related topics. Run a keyword search in Summon, then use the "Reference" filter to limit results to sources that come from encyclopedias or dictionaries.

2. Use one of the libraries broad, interdisciplinary reference databases.

3. Consult the subject guide for your area and see if there are any specialized reference books recommended by your librarian. These will usually be on a page called something like "Finding Information on your Topic", or "Do Some pre-Search".
